The visitors took the lead when a smart passing move ended with Jack Wilshere slotting past Brad Guzan.
Villa gave the ball away from kick-off and Arsenal capitalised by sending Oliver Giroud through on goal to double the lead within a minute of Wilshere's opener.
Christian Benteke met Matthew Lowton's superb cross with a diving header to give the home side a sight at a draw but Arsenal held on to the win.
