Aston Villa 3 Rotherham 0 - match report

Andi Weimann, Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph scored as the hosts dispatched their League One visitors and net a third round clash with Tottenham.

Rotherham offered a first-half threat but despite some enterprising play failed to seriously test debutant Jed Steer - who kept Villa's first clean sheet for 31 games.

Ben Pringle fired their best chance wide from distance and Michael O'Connor directed a free-kick over.

Villa will host Spurs, who enter the competition in the third round due to their Europa League involvement, in the week commencing September 23.

Steer made his Villa debut as Karim El Ahmadi and Joe Bennett came in for the only changes from the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Brad Guzan, Matt Lowton and Antonio Luna dropped out as Paul Lambert issued a statement of intent after losing last season's semi-final to Bradford.

Rotherham, unbeaten in League One, began brightly and attacked the flanks well with Vila struggling to deal with their wide threat.

But they undid all their good work when Villa went ahead with a Weimann rocket on 19 minutes.

The Austrian seized on Kari Arnason's poor pass in midfield to burst down the right and when his attempted pass bounced back of Arnason, he lashed it into the top corner from 20-yards.

It was a blow to Rotherham but they kept pressing as they tried to stretch Villa but hosts began to assert their authority.

And for all their enthusiasm the Millers were punished for another elementary mistake five minutes before the break.

Ashley Westwood robbed a dawdling Arnason on the right to find Agbonlahor and he looped a cross over for Benteke to power in a far post header.

Ben Pringle drove wide from 25-yards as Rotherham tried to recover but there was little way back for the Millers eight minutes into the second half.

Delph swapped passes with Benteke and raced onto the striker's chip to check inside and bury a low half volley past Scott Shearer.

Villa sensed blood and Shearer beat away Bennett's header with Rotherham's threat virtually gone.

Michael O'Connor's free-kick clipped the roof of the net with 15 minutes left and Lee Frecklington shot straight at Steer from distance.

Nicklas Helenius then sliced wide late on as Villa comfortably went through.
