Aston Villa ready to kick on with selling players

Aston Villa are ready to step up their summer clear-out after sealing a deal for Norwich goalkeeper Jed Steer.

The England under-19 shot-stopper will join when his contract expires on July 1.

He follows the arrivals of coaches Scott Marshall, Michael Watts and Chris Lorkin, who moved from Carrow Road this week.

Villa will have to pay compensation for Steer and are currently in discussions with the Canaries.

The signing pushes Shay Given closer to the exit and Villa boss Paul Lambert is delighted to have captured Steer.

He said: "Bringing in Jed will add to the goalkeeping department and helps with everyone pushing one another and wanting to improve.

"You want competition for places, which is something we didn't have last season."

Norwich winger Elliott Bennett had also been tipped as a Villa target but, while Lambert likes the ex-Wolves ace, any deal is unlikely.

Steer joins Aleksandar Tonev, Jores Okore, Nicklas Helenius, Leandro Bacuna and Antonio Luna as new arrivals at Villa Park.

He is likely to be the last arrival before Villa focus on shipping out their big earners and fringe players.

Brett Holman was allowed to join Al Nasr for free last week while Darren Bent, Stephen Ireland and Given are all expected to leave.

The squad return for pre-season on Monday before they jet out to Germany on July 7 for a three-game training camp.

Lambert added: "We have a good pre-season programme mapped out with a training camp and some games in German.

"We have several more back here fairly locally as well as a game in Dublin before we play Malaga on the eve of the new season.

"Everybody's looking forward to it, not least our fans who were terrific and steadfast in their support last season.

"It will be great to give them something to shout about when the new campaign gets under way."
