Celtic interested in Aston Villa's Richard Dunne

Celtic could hand Richard Dunne a career lifeline after manager Neil Lennon revealed his interest in the Aston Villa defender.

The 33-year-old will leave Villa when his contract expires at the end of the month after four years at the club.

He has been sidelined for a year with hip and groin problems but made a return in Ireland's 4-0 friendly win over Georgia on Sunday.

And while Lennon admitted signing Dunne would stray from his transfer policy he confirmed his interest in the Irishman.

"His age might go against him, however I'm not ruling that one out," he said.

"The way we have been signing players over the years, he would fall out of that category, but he is a player I have known a long time and have always liked. We have made no formal or informal movements as yet.

"Richard has had injury problems and hasn't played for a long time so I don't know what kind of condition he is in.

"We have also signed guys like Daniel Majstorovic before and it is always good to have one or two experienced players in."

Dunne failed to make an appearance under Paul Lambert and the club will not renew his contract as they cut the wage bill.

He has played 114 games, scoring five times, since his £5m move from Manchester City in 2009 and his last Villa outing came in the 2-0 defeat at Norwich in May 2012.
