Gabby Agbonlahor is focused on Aston Villa safety

Gabby Agbonlahor today hinted England stars are not picked on merit – and insisted he will put club before country.

The three-cap Villa striker will not wait for a call from Three Lions chief Roy Hodgson despite his red hot form as he targets Premier League survival.

His brace in Saturday's 2-1 win at Norwich took his tally to six goals in seven games and Villa to 40 points and on the brink of Premier League safety.

Agbonlahor, who won his last cap against Belarus in 2009, is open to an England comeback but is not expecting one for the end-of-season friendlies against Ireland and Brazil.

He said: "I'm not getting carried away. The way the England squad is now, the call-ups are differerent. He's (Hodgson) got players in there even if they are not playing.

"The likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, he had not played much and then he got a call-up.

"If the call comes then I am ready, of course. But we will have to wait and see. All that's on my mind now is playing for Villa and getting them safe."

Meanwhile, Matt Lowton limped off on Saturday – ending his ever-present league run this season – and is in a race to be fit to face Chelsea on Saturday.
