Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph today revealed he is prepared to miss the birth of his first child to help the club's survival battle.

The 23-year-old is due to become a dad with partner Natalie next month but is ready to put his club first.

He scored an own-goal to dent Villa's survival bid in the 1-1 draw against Fulham on Saturday, with the claret and blues heading to champions-elect Manchester United on Monday.

But the former Leeds star insisted he is ready to put Villa's Premier League future before his own.

He said: "We have spoken about it and we know it's a possibility. It could happen as one of the games is about to go on.

"But this is a crucial part of the season and if I'm down to play in the games, I need to be playing.

"Natalie appreciates the situation and is 100 per cent behind me. I want to see my baby being born and hope it happens. Ideally, it will happen on a Wednesday."

Villa, in 17th, could slip into the Premier League relegation zone if Wigan shock Manchester City tonight. Just two points separate the five above the bottom three.
