Ron Vlaar urges Aston Villa to move on from thrashing by Man City
Ron Vlaar today urged his Villa team-mates to forget their drubbing by Manchester City and turn their attentions to this weekend's clash with Arsenal.
Villa were thrashed 5-0 by City at the Etihad Stadium but the Dutch centre-back does not want them to dwell on the result and instead focus on the match against the Gunners at Villa Park.
"It's happened and it's not good but we have to move on and pick ourselves up for the next game which is Arsenal on Saturday," said the Villa skipper.
"Everyone was disappointed and upset, but we cannot change anything and must look to the next game. We just have to lift our heads up because it is only one set of three points.
"We can make amends against Arsenal and hopefully we will. Another game is coming soon. We can do a lot because we have players who can give us quality on the ball. We lost but we must stick together."
Vlaar also revealed Villa team-mate Andreas Weimann will be desperate to make an impact against Arsenal after his penalty nightmare last weekend.
A bizarre spot-kick was given for handball against Weimann by assistant referee Adrian Holmes in the defeat to City, although the ball did not appear to touch the Austria forward.
The incident came at a crucial moment of the game with Villa only 1-0 down and left Weimann distraught but Vlaar exonerated his team-mate from any blame.
"Of course he was upset. He said 'I didn't touch the ball' and he was right so it's not as though he has let anyone down or anything like that. Nobody blames him," added Vlaar.
"It was not a handball; I don't need to see the replays to know that! Andreas was disappointed but it wasn't his fault about the decision.
"He couldn't do anything about it and it was just a call from the linesman. I am sure he will be able to forget about it now and move on.
"Andreas is a strong character and I think it will make him even more determined to do something against Arsenal."
