Paul Lambert today confirmed Aston Villa have not had enquiries for Alan Hutton, although he hinted the defender may be sold before the transfer window closes.

Hutton was left out of Villa's pre-season tour to the US and did not feature in either of the warm-up matches against Peterborough or Nottingham Forest.

The 27-year-old Scotland international was signed for around £4m from Tottenham by former manager Alex McLeish, but struggled to win over fans during a difficult first season with the claret and blues.

The right-back was strongly linked with a £2m move to Stoke City but Lambert said Villa had not been contacted.

"Will he be a Villa player before the transfer window closes? I don't know, I'm not so sure. He's shown a good attitude in training so there are no qualms on that front. There have not been any enquiries for him at the minute, no," said the Villa boss.

Villa are prepared to listen to offers for Hutton, who signed a four-year contract reputed to be worth £30,000 a week.

Lambert hinted that his summer spending is not complete and he will meet with owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner to thrash out the next phase of his overhaul of the squad.

He added: "As manager you always want to bring in one or two more players."
