Aston Villa today continued their ruthless clearout of players after Emile Heskey revealed he will be released at the end of the season.

The veteran former England striker's contract expires next month and he has not been offered a new deal as the club continue to bring the wage bill down and plan for the future.

"There are no contract talks so I will be looking elsewhere," said Heskey, who has scored just one goal for Villa this season.

"I haven't got a club to be honest. Obviously my contract is up so I'll just take it day by day and see what crops up.

"I'm not going to turn anything down. I'll have a little break, and then see what offers there are. I'll look at anything.

"I am 34, but I still feel I can play so I don't see why I need to retire just now. From when I started, I always said I wanted to play at the highest level wherever that might be. You always strive for that."

Heskey will be joined through the exit door by experienced Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar who confirmed after the 1-1 draw with Tottenham that the last game of the season against Norwich will be his final appearance for the club.

With a number of other experienced players – including Stephen Warnock and James Collins – having just one year left on their contracts, there could be yet more departures when the transfer window reopens.

Heskey also offered his support to beleaguered boss Alex McLeish and said: "He is a battler. I think we needed a few more players. I'm sure Alex will have people on his radar."
