Matt Maher: Grumbling was the birth of VAR – will it now be the death of it?
It’s not uncommon as a journalist to read something you wish you’d written yourself.
That was certainly the case this week when seeing a tweet (or X, if you prefer) from London-based football reporter Liam Twomey.
“Can’t think of a more fitting end for VAR than death by managerial whinging, given that managerial whinging is the main reason we got saddled with VAR in the first place,” he wrote.
Hear, hear! Right back in the early days of VAR, this column noted how nauseating it was to hear managers who for so long banged the drum for the use of more technology, complain when that same technology now ruled against them.
