“If he wants to remain as manager then he will remain as manager,” said chairman David Sullivan yesterday, drawing a line under months of speculation which, more than once, appeared to have Moyes on the brink of an exit during an underwhelming Premier League season where the Hammers flirted with the relegation places.

All of that is forgotten now, of course, after Moyes became the first British manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to win a European title.

West Ham’s success served as a reminder of the ever-widening disparity in aspirations between those who reside in football club boardrooms and those who pay their money to sit in the stands.
