Gary Neville and Jack Grealish reject Sam Allardyce's Covid circuit-breaker call
Villa’s Jack Grealish backed Gary Neville after the former Manchester United defender dismissed calls for a Covid ‘circuit breaker’ to be introduced in football.
On Tuesday, Albion boss Sam Allardyce said he feels the Premier League needs to take a short break to reduce the spread of coronavirus in clubs.
With the virus once again on the rise thanks to a new, more contagious, strain, it is understood some top-flight clubs have proposed the game takes a two-week ‘cooling off’ period.
But yesterday, popular pundit Neville took to Twitter to say a short break would not be effective.
He said: “Can we please get this two-week circuit breaker thing off the table?
“The players would have to carry on mixing and training to be ready in two weeks for a match. They may get four or five days off.
“What is that going to do? Would have to be a long break to do anything meaningful!”
Grealish then responded to the tweet by saying: “Bang on!!” He then added a thumbs up emoji.
Allardyce, though, believes a circuit breaker is the way to go. “When I hear the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus, we can only do the right thing which is have a circuit break,” he said.
“I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do is catch Covid.
“I’m very concerned for myself and football in general.
“If that’s what’s needed, we need to do it.”
