Villa’s survival bid took a knock at the weekend with a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth, while Albion got back on track with a 2-0 win over Luton.

Phillips, who played for both clubs between 2005 and 2008, hopes both can cement their places in the top flight for next season.

“I certainly hope so. I was at the Villa game against Watford, and I was worried for them in the first half,” he said.

“But they looked a completely different team in the second and got the win, which came as a big relief. I was fortunate to speak to Jack (Grealish) for 10 minutes after the game and they all believe they will stay up.

“I said at the start of the season I thought they’d be OK, so hopefully they will. With Albion, they’ve had a bit of a blip in the league – I certainly see the two of them coming through this, so hopefully they’ll both be battling it out in the Premier League next season.”
