Wolverhampton Casual's glory bid is gathering pace

Wolverhampton Casuals manager Dean Gill believes the momentum is firmly with his side after their 3-0 victory at AFC Bridgnorth.

It was Cassies’ third win in a row and fifth consecutive clean sheet in the West Midlands League Premier Division, and Gill puts the good form down to a steady flow of games in recent weeks.

“We’re very happy with the win,” he said. “Sometimes goals can flatter teams on the scoreline, but we were very good on Saturday.

“They didn’t have a shot on goal, we were in control.

“We missed a lot of football in the first half of the season and that disrupted our flow, but we’re back on task with the momentum now.

“A stop-start season doesn’t suit us, we played on average two games a month for the first five months.

“We’re a team that wants to play football, and play good football.

“The lads were training and then left disappointed when the games were off – but we’re back on track now.”

Gill’s men boast the best defensive record in the top 10 tiers of English football, having conceded only four goals in 17 league games this season.

It’s a style of play that Gill says has been nurtured through the different levels at the club.

“The reality is that we started this project five years ago,” he added. “How we’re playing is how we want to play – we control the ball.

“We’ve worked to achieve this and we’re dominating games.”

“We have seven players aged 20 or under in the starting XI, these are not experienced lads.

“They are young players brought up in a certain way on how to play, our standard of football is to control the ball which means we’re not conceding many goals.”

Casuals sit third in the league with two games in hand over Shifnal Town and Bewdley Town above them.

Tonight they travel to face seventh-placed Pershore and Gill is expecting their opponents to raise their game.

“They’re a good side with a good budget,” he said. “It could be the toughest game we’ve had this season. Everyone raises their game and we’ve had to perform to get results – we need to be careful of that.”

“If we can get through January unscathed then I think we can look at where we are – but at the moment we’re taking it game by game.”
