Steelmen aim to test Bilston Town’s mettle
Bilston Town boss Wayne Spicer is expecting more fireworks when his side take on table-topping Shifnal Town tomorrow.
The West Midlands Premier Division’s match of the day sees the in-form Steelman head across the Shropshire border aiming to further check the leaders’ title push.
The clash is likely to come down to which one of the teams’ feared strike-forces produces the goods on the day.
Bilston have bagged 13 goals in their last two league outings with hot-shots Adam Garmson and Kevin Nickle claiming 12 of those.
Garmson is second in the division’s scoring charts with 24 while Shifnal boast the leading goal-grabber, Tom Hill, who has 34, and Kyle Montague, who has netted 20 times.
And when you consider the reverse meeting ended 6-4 in Shifnal’s favour, the defenders look set for another tough day.
“I think it will be a good game to watch for the neutrals,” said Spicer. “Our mentality is to play attacking football. We are scoring goals and they have plenty of fire-power, so I will be very surprised if the game ends nil-nil!
“Obviously when a game like this comes around, against the leaders, there is a bit of extra buzz about the place. The lads are really up for it and really looking forward to the game.
“We are under no illusions how tough the game will be. Danny Carter is doing a great job there, they are top of the league and one of the best teams in the league.
“But I certainly feel we are a stronger side than when we played them earlier in the season.
“We are first or second in the current form table and things have been going well recently.”
“We have played a few more games than some of the other sides near the top, but we have points on the board and want to keep adding a few more.
One player who won’t be aiding Bilston’s push for victory tomorrow is midfielder Trayvon Powell, after he left Queen Street to join Midland League high-fliers Heather St John’s.
“Trayvon had the opportunity to go and play at a level above and we won’t stand in a player’s way when that comes along,” said Spicer.
“It’s not very often you get the chance to step up a level and play a higher standard.
“He goes with our best wishes I hope it works out for him and that he does well.”
