Dean Gill happy with Wolverhampton Casuals’ start

Dean Gill is not getting carried away by Wolverhampton Casuals’ soaring start to the season despite his side’s unbeaten league run stretching to six on Saturday.

Cassies claimed a 2-1 away win at Gill’s former club Wednesfield, and sit fifth in the West Midlands Premier Division.

Gill spent 13 years with Wednesfield but he was over the moon to get one over his old side.

“I was absolutely chuffed to bits,” said Gill. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Wednesfield fan. I spent a third of my life working there, but when we play them, I want to beat them just as much as any other team.

“I have massively fond memories of my time there, all three of my boys have played there and I will happily admit I am a Wednesfield fan.

“However, make no mistake, when it comes to facing them, I am playing to win and was thrilled with the three points on Saturday.”

The win over Wednesfield came courtesy of first-half goals from Karen Danilian and Marvin Nesbitt. It sealed Cassies’ third win on the spin, but Gill is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“We are exactly where we want to be at this stage of the season, hanging on to the coat-tails of the top four,” said Gill.

“I know a lot of teams think we’re nailed on for promotion, that it’s done and dusted. But I have been in this game long enough now, to know that isn’t the case.

“It’s the best position we have been in, at this point of a season, but we’re only six games into the campaign.

“There is still a long way to go, let’s see where we are come Christmas.”

For 85 minutes, the game was comfortable for Casuals. However, Lewis Gill’s sending off, for violent conduct, made for a nervy finish, especially after Wednesfield grabbed one back from the spot.

“It was almost too comfortable, they went down to 10 men early on and in truth, we should have been further ahead,” said Gill.

“But then with five minutes left, our substitute gets himself sent off, they score a penalty and suddenly we’re under the cosh for no reason at all.

“It was massively frustrating, especially the way the lad got sent off. Yes, we have young lads, but they have played hundreds of games at this level. They really should know better.”

In spite of the setback of conceding, Cassies held out for the win and Gill believes his side are a match for anyone this season.

“I’m confident that every game we go into, we can come out with a positive result,” he said.

“I’m not arrogant enough to say we’re not going to lose at all this season, of course we will, but I don’t see any reason why we can’t win every game.

“We have all the right tools, and all the right players. If we continue to train hard, work hard, stick together as a group, then anything is possible this season.”

Elsewhere in the division, Noel Cotterill recorded his first win since being permanently appointed as Bilston Town’s first team boss.

Bilston ran out 3-0 winners at home to Dudley Sports. Justice Campbell scored either side of a Ryan Sappleton-Williams strike, to seal all three points for Cotterill’s men.

Dudley Town convincingly beat Littleton 4-0 at home, to move up to eighth, and within two points of the top four.

Hinesh Patel grabbed the headlines for Dudley with a double on his debut. Mitch Lawley and Lewis Taylor-Boyce were the other names on the scoresheet.

Bewdley continued their perfect start to the campaign, winning 5-1 at home to Cradley Town, to secure their seventh win in a row.

Kieran Day netted the consolation for Cradley who remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Black Country Rangers drew 0-0 at home to Darlaston Town.
