FOOTBALL: Lye host Midland League Premier leaders Sporting Khalsa tomorrow, with Whitehouse still hunting his first victory since taking the reins in the summer.

The former Tividale and Dudley Town boss has carried out a large-scale rebuild of the playing squad, which he is confident – given time – will bear fruit.

But he also knows there is already mounting scrutiny on his shoulders with the club sitting 18th in the table, after a haul of just two points from the opening seven games.

He said: “The league table does not lie and ultimately the buck stops with me.

“We know the pressure is on us.

“I really don’t think we are far away. We have been in every game but have just not been able to get over the line.

“We’ve been unlucky. It might take just one win to kick-start things.

“We are trying to build a mentality at the club and that does take time. We also know we need results.”

Whitehouse began the summer with just two players remaining from last season’s squad and admits finding a settled XI has been tricky.

He said: “There hasn’t been a match where we’ve named an unchanged team from the week before. It’s hard to develop the spirit I want.

“It does make things tough, but there is no point moaning. No-one held a gun to my head and told me to take the job.

“We have to try and turn things round as a team. We still have our heads held high and I am confident we are going to turn it round.”

The weekend’s action gets under way tonight when Walsall Wood visit Coventry United.
