EFL clubs’ accounts can stay hidden from rivals

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has failed in his bid to gain a greater insight into the finances of other Championship clubs.

Gibson would like more transparency with accounts and proposed at a meeting of EFL clubs yesterday that accountants should be allowed to review each others’ finances.

However, that proposal was voted down at the end of a five-hour meeting at Nottingham Forest, with the majority of clubs deciding the EFL was already policing things effectively enough.

They pointed to the nine-point deduction handed out to Birmingham City this season as proof of that.

Last week, Gibson called for an EFL investigation into Villa’s finances, as well as those of Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. The 61-year-old believes the three clubs are bypassing the new profitability and sustainability rules.
