Who could do what on transfer deadline day?

Luke Hatfield spoke to Tim Spiers, Matt Wilson and Matt Maher about each club and their transfer prospects heading into the final hours of the window.

Here's what they had to say...

What sort of transfer deadline day can we expect from Wolves? Are you expecting lots of incomings and outgoings?

A busy one! After the feast of 11 signings in two months it’s been a famine in August for Wolves.

When Leo Bonatini joined from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal on loan on August 1 Wolves were averaging a signing roughly every five days in the three-and-a-bit transfer windows since Fosun bought the club for £30million late last July.

They had landed 25 players either permanently or on loan in 135 eligible transfer days covering last August, the January window and the start of this summer.

But in a change of tack they’ve kept their fans waiting in August – with two big deals going down to the final day of the transfer window.

A striker and a central midfielder must both be signed today. And expect a couple of outgoings too.

Which areas do you expect to see Wolves target if they do business, and why?

Wolves were already chasing a proven striker of the 15/20-goal-a-season variety before Nouha Dicko departed for Hull City this week.

The fact that Bonatini is now their only recognised senior striker heightens the urgency and is potentially damaging when it comes to late negotiations with clubs who will know of Wolves' desperation.

A number of targets have fallen by the wayside or proved too difficult to land.

Their domestic shortlist has included Nelson Oliveira (Norwich City), Jordan Rhodes (Sheffield Wednesday), Idrissa Sylla (QPR), Jordan Hugill (Preston) and Dwight Gayle (Newcastle).

Overseas they’ve looked at Guido Carrillo from Monaco and Nathael Julan of fellow French side Le Havre.

Of the above, none have yet to move to another club and given how Wolves are scrambling around for a striker you can't rule any of them out. Or don't be surprised if a Jorge Mendes client rocks up to save the day.

It’s set to be a busy final few hours of the transfer window at Compton Park.

As for central midfield, they looked well stocked until Dave Edwards joined Reading last weekend.

With only Jack Price and possibly Connor Ronan as central midfield cover for Ruben Neves and Romain Saiss, that's now a big priority too.

Indeed with Saiss making an inconsistent start to the season someone of first-team standard, not just a bench-warmer, would be preferable.

After trying but failing to snare Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback, Manchester United youngster Scott McTominay emerged as their primary target last night.

The 6ft 4in powerful Lancaster-born youngster, who has expressed his desire to play for Scotland, is very highly rated at Old Trafford and featured for United’s first team during pre-season.

Nuno Espirito Santo knows Jose Mourinho well – and may have had to convince his Portuguese compatriot that Molineux is a good destination for his young star after Cameron Borthwick-Jackson barely got a kick during a season-long loan last season.

How many players do you expect to come into Wolves today? And how many departures do you think could happen?

It's looking like two.

They had been sniffing around for an experienced left back but having had little joy in their search it looks like that's been canned, plus Ruben Vinagre produced two timely good performances against Southampton and Reading to suggest he's good enough to cover for Barry Douglas.

As for outgoings, expect Jordan Graham to leave on loan with a number of Championship clubs interested including Fulham. Michal Zyro could also get a temporary move.

And the forgotten man, Prince Oniangue, who can't get a game for the under-23s let alone the first team, will be desperate to seal a transfer if a suitable club can be found.

Another return to France would be the most likely outcome.

Who in your eyes has been the biggest deal for Wolves during the transfer window? Or could it be a player to arrive on deadline day?

The most important deal is yet to be done.

Bonatini has made a quietly impressive start with two goals and some very tidy link-up play but will he be the man to fire Wolves to promotion?

A proven and clinical striker has been lacking for 18 months since Benik Afobe departed.

Wolves are leaving it late but their most vital transfer should happen today.

Otherwise it's been a very productive window with Ruben Neves suggesting he'll live up to his record transfer billing and a number of others (Jota on loan, Boly on loan, Ruddy on a free and Douglas for £1m) looking like bargain buys.

Potential deals on deadline day: A striker (in), Scott McTominay (in), Jordan Graham (out),

West Brom - Matt Wilson

Tony Pulis has pulled the rabbit out of the hat with the signing of Grzegorz Krychowiak, can he end the window with a bang too? (AMA)

What sort of transfer deadline day can we expect from Albion? Are you expecting lots of incomings and outgoings?

It could be a very busy day for the Baggies with the possibility that both Jonny Evans and Nacer Chadli could leave the club for a combined worth of around £50m.

If Evans goes, he definitely needs to be replaced with another centre-half and while it wouldn’t be as necessary to replace Chadli, it would certainly be advised.

As for incomings, the club have already completed the loan signing of Polish midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak from Paris Saint-Germain yesterday.

That means the £10.6m deal agreed with Fenerbahce for Josef de Souza won't be going ahead.

Which areas do you expect to see Albion target if they do business, and why?

If Evans leaves, he’ll need a centre-back, and if Chadli goes, he’ll want an attacking midfielder.

If the club are box-clever with their money they may be able to add a striker too but that would require a lot of business to be done in a short space of time and these deals are not straightforward.

How many players do you expect to come into Albion today? And how many departures do you think could happen?

Again, depends on the outgoings.

If no-one leaves, we could maybe see one new face brought in, if that.

But if big money is made from Evans and Chadli, then all bets are off.

Forgotten man Callum McManaman is also likely to depart and there could be loan deals for teenagers Kane Wilson, Rekeem Harper, and Sam Field.

Who in your eyes has been the biggest deal for Albion during the transfer window? Or could it be a player to arrive on deadline day?

All of the signings who have been given time to impress have done exactly that.

It was important to replace Darren Fletcher with Gareth Barry and Ahmed Hegazi looks like a great find for a low price, but I still think the most important signing was the one made all that time ago near the start of the window.

Jay Rodriguez already has two goals from his first four games, and he looks to have added a much-needed threat from open play.

We've yet to see what Krychowiak can offer, but that's a real coup for the club getting him on-loan, it'll be interesting to see how he adapts to the Premier League.

Potential deals on deadline day: Jonny Evans (out), Nacer Chadli (out), Callum McManaman (out).

Aston Villa - Matt Maher

Steve Bruce did the majority of his work early, but will there be a late flurry at Aston Villa?

What sort of transfer deadline day can we expect from Villa? Are you expecting lots of incomings and outgoings?

I don’t anticipate it being too hectic.

Villa got the vast majority of their business done relatively early in the window and the final hours will be about putting the finishing touches on their work.

Outgoings will be the main focus, as they have been for much of the summer.

We may see one more signing, at a push, though that all depends on sales.

Which areas do you expect to see Villa target if they do business, and why?

Despite having to balance the books, Steve Bruce is pretty satisfied with the work Villa have been able to get done during this window.

The one area he would like a little more strength in depth is up front, though the emergence of Keinan Davis has made this less of an issue than it was a fortnight ago.

Jonathan Kodjia is also due back from injury in a few weeks time so the deal would have to be right for Villa to bring anyone else in.

How many players do you expect to come into Villa today? And how many departures do you think could happen?

I expect it will be one in at most.

There are a few who could leave and most supporters will know who they are.

Gary Gardner is keen to move on after seeing his first-team opportunities limited, as is Tommy Elphick.

Villa would also love to move Ross McCormack out for good but the likelihood is they will have to settle for another loan.

Who in your eyes has been the biggest deal for Villa during the transfer window? Or could it be a player to arrive on deadline day?

It’s hard to look past John Terry.

That was a deal most of the club’s board viewed as unlikely at the start of the summer.

Generally I think Villa have done a decent job in adding experience to their squad, while moving on players deemed surplus to requirements.

The signing of Sam Johnstone on another season’s loan from Manchester United shouldn’t be overlooked in terms of importance either. That was an area of the team which needed addressing.

Potential deals on deadline day: Gary Gardner (out), Ross McCormack (out), Tommy Elphick (out).
