Wayne Jones produces best yet in Gibraltar

A battling run to the third round of the PDC's Gibraltar Trophy saw Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones produce his best darts of the year so far.

The Belgian had to be at his level best to barge past the Wednesfield thrower as he hit four 180s and a 170 checkout, averaging 102.33.

This time lady luck was not on Jones' side as it had been the previous evening in a fantastic see-saw battle with Peter Wright, writes Craig Birch.

Their second round tussle went all the way to the last leg as both players shone, Jones nearing three-figures with 98.3 as he landed two maximums on the way.

It was the Black Country veteran who prevailed 6-5 against the fourth seed, mirroring his efforts when he first toed the oche at the Victoria Stadium on Friday night.

The 49-year-old first opposed the in-form Andrew Gilding, who reached his first PDC major semi-final in the UK Open two weeks ago to break into the top 32.

Jones had to fight tooth and nail as they shared 10 legs before coming out on top, this weekend's exploits a much-needed morale boost after a difficult period.
