Jamie Hughes picks up third BDO ranking title
Tipton's Jamie Hughes today targeted a BDO ranking title in the United Kingdom after making it a hat-trick of tournament wins overseas.
The 28-year-old, less than three weeks after making his World Championship debut at Lakeside, prevailed in the Romania Classic Open,
The only ranking competition for the organisation's European darters last weekend was taken by Hughes, who won a total of seven games.
It was from the quarter-finals where 'Yozza' really began to shine, with Saturday's event taking place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Bucharest.
Welshman Jim Williams was whitewashed 4-0, before Hughes recorded a 98.98 average in an impressive 5-0 semi-final shut out of Greg Upton.
He had come from 3-1 down to beat James Hurrell 6-4 in the final, adding to his Antwerp Open and Zuiderduin Masters victories from last year.
Hughes said: "It was a decent field of players and I felt great until that slow start in the final. That always seems to happen to me, but I am getting a knack of pulling it back.
"I am playing in the Dutch Open this weekend, then it's county darts for Warwickshire and into the Scottish Open, from February 13 t0 15, where I got to the final last year.
"I know I won't get beat by the same guy again, as Robbie Green has left to join the PDC. I do fancy myself for that one."
The next televised BDO tournament on the horizon is the World Trophy, which will take place in front of the Euro Sport cameras at Event City in Manchester from February 26 to March 1.
Hughes has been drawn with Japan's Hiroaki Shimizu, who played then-title holder Christian Kist at the 2014 World Championship.
The Black Country thrower said: "I will just go up there and play the board. I am hoping to have a good run and that would be another big points boost."
