The first darters arrive for the Grand Slam
BDO stars Wesley Harms and Jan Dekker became the first to arrive in Wolverhampton for the Grand Slam of Darts last night.
The Dutch duo will compete in the cross-over tournament at Wolverhampton Civic Hall alongside three other Lakeside regulars,
Last year's World Championship semi-finalists Robbie Green and Alan Norris earned a two-year Grand Slam pass for their exploits.
Richie George, son of darts favourite Bobby, cashes in the second annual installment to join Harms and Dekker for another Civic run.
But it was flying Dutchmen 'Sparky' and 'Double Dekker' that landed first, tipping up at the city's Cleveland Arms pub to practice their arrows.
Grand Slam debutants Green and Norris are also in action during Saturday afternoon's opening session, but can travel nearer the time.
Somerset-based Scotsman Norris will set off first and is the highest-ranked BDO player involved, rising to No 2 in their world rankings.
He said: "I have watched the Grand Slam for a few years and I think the atmosphere down there is going to be electric.
"It's a bit more closed in, a bit more of a cauldron feeling, and it's going to be pretty exciting.
"I've been doing the BDO a circuit for a while, so it will be like playing an exhibition match against some of your darting heroes.
"I'm really looking forward to locking horns with them, it's going to be good."
Norris has reached the quarter-final of the World Masters and is becoming adept at springing shocks since a great run at Lakeside, where he came into the competition unseeded.
He said: "I've had a good year. I've won about six tournaments on the circuit and gone up the rankings, my form is good and I'm happy.
"I averaged 35 per dart (105 per visit) in a County game last weekend and I'd take that in every match in Wolverhampton - I'd be tough to beat! We'll have a laugh, that's for sure."
Tickets for the Grand Slam, sponsored by Singha Beer, are still available by calling 0870 320 7000 or by visiting www.wolvescivic.co.uk. Some sessions have already sold out.
