Nonetheless, 'the Wanderer' remains No 32 in the Order of Merit today despite his latest European Tour challenge ending at the first hurdle on Friday night.

Payne, a regular on the Youth Tour, was a comprehensive 6-2 winner after punishing poor finishing from Jones, who is having a nightmare year on the floor.

Rugeley's Mark Hylton never got started, either, as he was shot down by the clinical finishing of the in-form Peter Wright, who conceded nothing in six legs and won 6-0.

Bloxwich's Matthew Dennant endured a tough first draw against world No 12 Robert Thornton but the Scot was pushed close by the 22-year-old, who took four legs before losing 6-4.

Phil Taylor was crowned the winner of the tournament at the Victoria Stadium, claiming £20,000 prize money in the process, after beating Welsh youngster Jamie Lewis 6-1 last night.
