Wolverhampton Cricket Club nets helping hand from Ted Dexter
New cricket nets were officially opened in style by an England legend.
Former England captain Ted Dexter cut the ribbon on new all-weather nets which have formed part of a £60,000 refurbishment at Wolverhampton Cricket Club.
Dexter played 62 times for England and has recently moved to the city from France to be nearer his family.
And 82-year-old Dexter, who is now a member at the cricket club, is delighted to see the club thriving with its newly improved facilities which also include top-of-the-range covers.
“I’ve been coming to this area for 10 years – my son lives and works here and we’ve come to look after the grandchildren,” the ex-England star said. “I’m amazed that it’s flourishing in the way it is.
“The nets are fantastic, top grade, the club’s doing well – it’s the Dexter effect!”
Member Chris Bowyer helped secure funding, which came from an anonymous donor who left the money to the club in his estate.
Mr Bowyer said: “We’re very, very grateful to him. Cricket clubs these days are hard up – the upkeep costs a lot of money.
“To have a donation like this was absolutely fantastic.
“We were wondering who we would get to open them for us and Ted is ideal!
“Rachael Heyhoe Flint lived nearby and was a patron here. As one personality sadly passes on, another one joins the club.”
