Warwickshire’s Andy Umeed broke the record for the slowest century in County Championship history to set up an intriguing final day of the Division One clash with Lancashire at Edgbaston.

The 21-year-old took 429 minutes to reach his hundred, which was nine longer than it took Northamptonshire’s Billy Denton against Derbyshire in 1914.

Umeed was eventually out for 113 out of a Warwickshire total of 321 which earned the home side a lead of 48. But after Lancashire reached the close on 178-4 and a lead of 130, the prospect of the home side having to chase over 250 for victory was a difficult looking one.

With Lancashire chasing a third successive win on a slow pitch where runs have come at fewer than three an over, Warwickshire will have ensure they do not repeat recent batting collapses.

Even with Umeed having frustrated Lancashire for more than a day, Steven Croft’s side will still fancy their chances of putting Warwickshire under pressure on the final day after Alex Davies’ forceful 79 gave the Red Rose momentum.

No play was possible on the third day of Durham’s County Championship Division two match at home to Worcestershire.

A day and a half has now been lost, play being abandoned after 43 overs on Tuesday.
