Staffordshire are rocked by late ducks
Two late middle order ducks put the pressure on Staffordshire in their Unicorns Championship clash with Cumberland.
Staffs lost the toss but were invited to bat in the Eastern Division encounter and made a solid start thanks to openers Kadeer Ali and Sam Kelsall.
The duo put on 53 for the first wicket, before Ali was dismissed lbw on 31 by Mattie McKiernan, before the leg spinner produced a superb one-handed catch to claim the wicket of Kelsall for 22.
Alex Thomson then helped guide Staffs to 102-3 off 41 overs at lunch. But he fell shortly after the interval just one run short of his half-century.
Peter Wilshaw then plundered a couple of sixes off McKiernan before being bowled out for 21.
But while Michael Hill remains at the crease on 41 not out – he received little support from elsewhere.
Tim Maxfield fell for just 10 with James Middleton and then Brinder Phagura both being dismissed for ducks.
It meant when rain stopped play, Staffs finished the first of three days on 190-7. Play was due to resume today with Hill and Matthew Goodwin at the crease.
