Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott starts on comeback trail

Warwickshire chief Dougie Brown today insisted there is no timescale on Jonathan Trott's competitive return – after the England batsman played at Bridgnorth.

Trott fielded the full 20 overs in his first appearance for more than a month for Warwickshire as they took on Shropshire in a friendly Twenty20 clash with Shropshire last night.

The 32-year-old – who was not included in the Bears batting line-up - had not featured for the county since suffering a recurrence of the stress-related illness which forced him to return from England's Ashes tour of Australia last November.

And despite last night's run-out, director of cricket Brown says there are still no time limits on when he might return to competitive action.

"He's just getting back into it and this was just the right sort of place for him to do that," said Brown.

"It was great to see Trotty back, and Boyd Rankin too after his injury problems in Australia.

"Boyd bowled really fast and Trotty went out there and fielded for 20 overs. He was noisy, he was lively, he was bubbly.

"We want a fully buoyant, enthused Jonathan Trott to come back into cricket as and when he's ready – and this was a good start in that process."

Trott's Ashes exit attracted big headlines and his return to competition with Warwickshire was then cut short last month after only one County Championship game, against Sussex, when he suffered a recurrence of the symptoms.

But he has remained very much part of things at Edgbaston and was in the dressing room following the county's win over Nottinghamshire last month, later holding talks with Brown.

He was then present at the next county championship game with Middlesex before returning to training late last week.

Warwickshire, who were playing under their Twenty20 "Birmingham" name, comfortably won the friendly contest by 97 runs thanks in large part to Rankin, another man on the comeback trail after injury.

The seamer has struggled with injury since featuring for England in their ill-fated tour of Australia but looked back to his best as he claimed three wickets at a cost of only three runs.
