India came to a standstill today as the long goodbye for Sachin Tendulkar got under way.

The Little Master strode out in Mumbai for his 200th – and final – Test as millions watched on.

The 40-year-old record run-scorer in Tests and one-day internationals will quit all cricket after India's second Test against West Indies.

Tendulkar's final match caps a month-long outpouring of emotion from a cricket-mad nation of 1.2bn people which started when he confirmed that the series against West Indies would be his last.

Such has been the interest in Tendulkar's final match that a website selling tickets crashed shortly after opening, receiving 19.7m hits in the first hour.

And the fans were hoping to see some first-day Tendulkar action after the tourists were skittled for 182 today from 55.2 overs.

Meanwhile, in Sydney, England enjoyed a good day as they finalised their Ashes preparations.

Jonathan Trott (83), Alastair Cook (81) and Kevin Pietersen (57) stacked up the runs as they finished on 302-5 against an Australia XI. Earlier, Steven Finn boosted his own Ashes hopes with a five-wicket haul as the Aussies were skittled for 304.

And Trott believes his hard work in the build-up to the Ashes is beginning to pay-off. His 83 followed his 113no against a Western Australia Chairman's XI in the opening match of the tour.

"I have been working hard with the coaches – and with Andy (Flower) over the last couple weeks on a few things a felt I needed to iron out," Trott said today.

"I feel I have got a bit of rhythm coming back but you never know quite know until you are in front of 40,000 people in Brisbane whether all the hard work is going to pay off or not. I am working hard on trying to get into some good touch so it is nice to get some runs in the warm-up games, that's what they are there for."
