The veteran Sri Lankan batted for the first time since arriving in England as Daryl Mitchell's side began a two-day game against Gloucestershire at Chester Road North.

The 36-year-old was trapped leg before wicket by Liam Norwood as Worcestershire were reduced to 30-3.

Earlier, Mitchell had been dismissed lbw by David Payne to leave his side 2-1 early on. And Moeen Ali was caught behind off James Fuller for five to make it 7-2.

Kidderminster pair Matt Pardoe (17 not out) and Neil Pinner helped the hosts reach 38-3 in the 18th over. But Pinner was next out, caught by Fuller off Benny Howell for two to make it 43-4.

Worcestershire have moved their pre-season matches to Kidderminster following flooding at New Road. Yesterday they won a 40-over friendly, also against Gloucestershire at Chester Road, by eight wickets.

Gloucestershire were all out for 101 in 26.3 overs despite 50 from Howell, with the visitors 63-9 at one stage.

Ali took 4-39, Nick Harrison had figures of 3-26, David Lucas claimed 2-12 and Jack Shantry took 1-22.

In reply, Ali and Mitchell put on 72 for the first wicket as the hosts reached their target if 102 in the 16th over.

The teams agreed to continue the innings for the full 40 overs and Mitchell made 74 in his side's 278-6.
