Prizefighter Sam Eggington gets first knockout

Stourbridge's Sam Eggington built on his Prizefighter appearance by scoring his first knockout victory with Vaclav Skromach counted out in the second round.

The teenage welterweight, 19, hammered away at the Newark-based Czech in the second session of their bout and let fly after trapping him in the ropes.

With referee Shaun Messer looking on, Eggington brought down the guard with hooks and Skromach foolishly tried to battle his way out by trading blows with his foe.

That left him wide open to another right-left combination that put him flat out on the canvas. He tried to beat the count, but failed to rise fast enough as he was counted out.

They clashed at the Institute in Digbeth, Birmingham yesterday afternoon, with Coseley duo Tommy Ghent and debutant Ryan Corrigan also adding wins to their records.

Welterweight Ghent was back in the ring after a year out and left his opponent, Hungarian Jozsef Gerebecz, feeling faint after a fight-ending blow in the first round.

With Gerebecz's guard high, Ghent mimicked a right hook that falsely gave his opponent the impression he could return to the front foot and continue to attack.

Ghent duly repeated the shot and floored his opponent, who beat the count on unsteady legs and hadn't recovered before he was back on the mat from a glancing right.

Referee Messer acted and waved him off but stable-mate Corrigan, a super featherweight, went the distance on his paid debut against another Hungarian, Imre Nagy.

Corrigan, 20, had it tough against the come-forward visitor who wouldn't let him settle but won comfortably on points, dropping just a share of a round in a 40-37 points win.
