Matt Maher: Reluctant hero Sam Eggington still delivers where it matters most

Around an hour before Ben Whittaker was soaking up the spotlight in Birmingham city centre on Thursday night, Sam Eggington was doing almost everything he could to avoid it.

To say the 31-year-old doesn’t enjoy media duties would be something of an understatement.

But having been around for more than a decade and now preparing for his 45th professional bout, everyone has long realised not to take it personally.

Even Eggington, always unfailingly polite and honest about his lack of enthusiasm for being interviewed, can find some wry amusement at being stuck at the Bullring Centre for an open workout, pretty much the last place he wants to be.

“How am I? Sick to death of it!” he smiles. “I just can’t wait until Sunday night. That’s the truth.
