'Forgotten man' Jack Summers to return

West Bromwich's Jack Summers will shake off his 'forgotten man' tag when he returns to the ring on Saturday night.

Summers reeled off two points victories in his debut year before sitting on the sidelines for what has turned out to be a 14-month absence, writes Craig Birch.

A number of bouts had been made for him between super bantam and featherweight, only for his opponents to let him down at the last minute.

But the ideal birthday present now looks to have arrived six days before he turns 22, even if he does have to travel to Tewkesbury School in Gloucestershire.

He has been paired for four rounds of action with Luke Fash on an Errol Johnson promoted show there and aims to vent frustrations through his fists.

Summers said: "Hopefully it will be different this time. I wish I knew how to stop the guys pulling out, it's so frustrating because I can't control it.

"The fights I was supposed to have had, the other lads have dropped out at the last minute. That has happened about six times on the bounce now, so it's really frustrating."

All Summers has been able to do in the meantime is hone his skills at the gym, having showed promise beating Qasim Hussain and Russ Midgley, both at Walsall Town Hall last year.

He said: "I have kept ticking over and stayed focused. I feel like I have improved as a boxer, even though I haven't been fighting.

"I have been working a lot on my fitness, as I have had so much time in the gym, and that will benefit me now going forward.

"I know I won't be rusty when I get in the ring, because I have been sparring regularly to keep me sharp and I have been getting plenty of rounds in.

"The plan is to continue from where I left off and try and put on good performances, just like I did when I turned pro. The only thing I want to change this time around is to stay active.

"I don't mind going down to Tewkesbury. With this not being a home show, it takes the pressure off me and I can just relax and concentrate on giving a good performance."
