Martin Gethin upsets the odds by knockout
Walsall's Martin Gethin upset the odds by cold cocking John Wayne Hibbert after being called up at less than a week's notice.
'The Quiet Man' made a huge noise live on Sky Sports at the Wembley Arena in London after replacing late pull-out Tommy Coyle, writes Craig Birch.
The two clashed for the IBF Inter-Continental super lightweight title on Saturday night, which Gethin must immediately vacate so the belt can be contested again.
He already holds a world ranking with the organisation, having won their International honours and taking part in a final eliminator for the full crown.
The former Midlands, English and British lightweight boxed the previous Saturday, unaware of what was to come, but encountered little trouble.
The 33-year-old was contemplating retirement after beating Liam Richards in a four-round points whitewash at Walsall Town Hall.
Opportunity knocked with the chance to take on Hibbert and Gethin, in convincing fashion, knocked him out towards the end of the fourth round.
He had already done a number on Hibbert, 31, who was hurt by a left hook in the first and had his nose bloodied in the second.
A big right hand left Hibbert dazed in the fourth and Gethin followed up with the same shot to settle matters two minutes and 28 seconds into the session.
Hibbert was unconscious on the canvas, but regained his senses after receiving oxygen and showed sportsmanship by congratulating Gethin. Referee Michael Alexander officiated.
