This could be Martin Gethin's swansong

Walsall's Martin Gethin gets back into the ring on home turf later this month freely admitting it could be a farewell for his fans.

The 32-year-old is refusing to rule out his fight date at Walsall Town Hall on Saturday November 19 could be his swansong,

writes Craig Birch.

Gethin admitted, two days after losing to Adam Little last time out, that he wasn't looking past one more run-out in his hometown.

'The Quiet Man' will get his wish in a six-rounder, featuring on Errol Johnson's Black Country Boxing show titled 'Going For Gold.'

The former Midlands, English and British lightweight boss resumes his campaign at super lightweight, against former English title challenger Liam Richards.

And Gethin agrees he will know by the end of the contest whether it's worth boxing or to hang up the gloves on a 12-year pro career, at the venue where he won the British title in 2013.

He said: "This next fight is very important. If this goes totally wrong, then it will be a sign for me to knock my career on the head.

"I just wanted to make sure this fight would be in Walsall, in case it does happen to be my last one.

"I wanted to have one last fight in front of my home fans who have followed me for so many years. I want to see how I feel in this fight and take it from there.

"When I first started, I didn't want to keep on boxing to the point where I was too old and just getting my head punched in and fighting for the sake of it.

"You have to come to the end sometime and, if you carry on, you shouldn't start getting hurt. This will tell me if I can carry on or not. I want to see what I've got left in the tank."

Defeat by third round knockout to Little, at Blackpool's Hilton Hotel in August, was an eliminator for the Commonwealth title and left Gethin seriously considering his future.

It was only the second time he has been stopped by a body shot in 35 paid bouts, a stiff right hand putting him down.

Only the heavy-handed Ammeth Diaz, in a final eliminator for the IBF world lightweight title, left him unable to beat the count through a body blow in 2013.

He's already coaching aspiring fighters alongside brothers Darren and Steven, both ex-professionals, at their Wild Star Boxing Club in Aldridge.

He said: "It was a poor performance in my last fight and after that I wanted to get straight back in the ring and put it right.

"The defeat to Little did dent my confidence, because I went in there expecting to beat him. I don't think he is the best. It's just one of those shots you can get caught with.

"When I do retire, I want to stay in the sport. I want to get the kids off the street in the area and bring them into boxing. It's been great for me."

Top of the Town Hall bill will see Manny Zaber, from Old Hill, and Josh Baillie contest the vacant British Challenge super featherweight title over eight rounds.

Another six-rounder will see Zach Parker, named Best Newcomer at the British Boxing Board of Control Midlands area's annual awards, take on the never-stopped Adam Jones.

Wolverhampton's Josh Burke will be looking to move into position for the vacant Midlands cruiserweight title with another win in one of three four-rounders, over Aaron Green.

Chasetown's Luke Jones is targeting a hat-trick of pro wins with his first Town Hall appearance, at the expense of the busy Hussain.

West Bromwich's Thomas Loach is waiting to be paired for his second outing, after beating Ali Wyatt at the same venue on his debut in September.

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 ringside, are on still sale from the Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900. The show is sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall.

The casino, on Bentley Mill Way, will host the weigh-in and after-show party (over 18s). A number of free cars from Yellow Taxis will go from the fight venue to the function.
