Rob Hunt loses, Sam Evans wins by TKO
Stafford's Rob Hunt suffered a shock points defeat to William Warburton on Saturday night – but Wednesbury's Sam Evans used the last round to score a TKO.
Hunt's 30th professional contest proved a setback as he went down on points to journeyman Warburton in Stoke-on-Trent, writes Craig Birch.
Both the 30-year-old welterweight and light welter Evans, 20, featured in six-rounders at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex on a show promoted by boxing legend Ricky Hatton.
A three-round deficit of 59-56 in the Hunt fight suggested referee Reece Carter was in no doubt of the winner, as Warbuton produced another upset.
The 29-year-old registered his 21st paid victory, avoiding what would have been his 100th loss with eight draws. 'Warby' also defeated then Midlands champion Jason Welborn earlier this year.
Upsetting another former area titlist in Hunt sends the 10-year pro back to the drawing board, after what was his first loss over-the-distance. He, his camp and his supporters felt the result was harsh.
Evans, with Hatton in his corner as coach, finally broke the resistance of Lithuania's Andrej Capur with the sixth round one minute and 41 seconds old.
Capur's defensive skills eroded as Evans constantly waded in with the uppercut, before punching his punches together to force man in the middle Carter to step in.
A left hook to the head shook Capur to his boots and Evans went for the kill, unleashing big shots with both hands until Carter acted.
It was a first stoppage for the Black Country fighter since last October, since when he's reeled off six victories without reply.
