Sam Evans will be looking for openings

It will be safety first for Wednesbury's Sam Evans when he steps through the ropes for his next contest tomorrow night.

Evans is coached by Ricky Hatton and will be led into battle by the boxing legend at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke-on-Trent,

writes Craig Birch.

The undefeated welterweight has been paired with Lithuania's Andrej Capur, who possesses sound defensive skills.

The Black Country fighter has done his homework and intends to box smartly, as he looks to record his sixth straight victory without reply as a professional.

With Hatton in his corner, Evans turned over in October of last year with a third round stoppage of Zaurs Sadihovs. He's racked up the rounds with four points successes since.

His last outing was a six-round landslide vanquishing of grizzled veteran and former Midlands champion Kevin McCauley in July.

Hatton hailed the bout against McCauley, who was 16 years his senior, as a "perfect learning fight" and Evans is expecting more of the same this weekend.

The 20-year-old said: "Training has gone great, not just with Ricky but my other coaches in Blain Younis and Mike Jackson. I've had a good camp and more than ready to go.

"It's good to be at a new venue in Stoke, I'm excited to be there and I've got some good support coming. I'll be looking to put on a show for them.

"I'm going to box my opponent, first off, and then look to sink him some big shots. I'll pile on the pressure and, if I see him hurt or starting to gas, I'll look to get him out of there.

"Hopefully, he'll make mistakes and I'll find the gaps to exploit."

While Evans will take in the fight arena for the first time, Hatton was promoting a European title showdown live on Sky Sports at Fenton Manor as recently as 2010.

The former two-weight world champion again stages the show here, with tickets still available now and on the door at fight night.

Priced at £30 for general admission and £60 ringside, they can be purchased in advance from www.hattonboxing.com.
