Manny Zaber kept the faith for fight night

Manny Zaber has endured a different sort of problem with his weight as he prepares to box away from home on Saturday night.

The unbeaten 21-year-old from Old Hill hits the road to Gloucestershire this weekend for his seventh professional contest,

Zaber steps through the ropes at Tewkesbury School with home fighter Andy Harris, on promoter Western County Boxing's three-fight card.

Most boxers struggle to keep the weight off ahead of fight night, but the devout Muslim has instead been fasting for Ramadan.

The month of Ramadan took place over a large part of his training camp - June 6 to July 5 - but Zaber has battled through and remained on course for this ring date.

He said: "It's been a different camp this time around. When you are fasting, it's hard to really train much because you are not eating or drinking between sunrise and sunset.

"We do that for an entire month, so I've adjusted my routine to suit and have just ticked over fitness-wise and worked on my technique.

"I've got a good engine, anyway, so the fitness is there. It's been useful to work on my timing, which is something I'm keen to improve.

"It's not about throwing lots and lots of shots, it's about picking your punches and timing them. This camp has given me the opportunity to work on that aspect of my game.

"I'm a proud Muslim and Ramadan is important to me. It has been hard as I've not been eating from about 2.30am to 9.30pm each day, so that's not without its challenges.

"Ramadan has finished, so I've had a good last week or two of my camp and I'm feeling energised again now.

"Andy is a very experienced fighter. He knows what he's doing but I am, 100 per cent, just expecting another win on my record."

The show will be topped by an eight-round International Challenge middleweight title fight, between hometown hero Adam Harper and Lithuanian Deividas Sajauka.

Gloucester's Akeem Ennis-Brown tackles Plymouth's Chris Adaway to complete the card in a tasty lightweight contest. For tickets, priced at £30 and £50 ringside, call 07772 466 790.
