Rowley Regis' Jason Welborn sent a message out to the rest of the division with a 56-second win in his first fight back at welterweight.

Welborn was back down at welter for the first time since January 2013 in a scheduled six-rounder on Saturday,

writes Craig Birch.

The 29-year-old, who turns 30 on May 9, came in at 10st 9lb and took less than a minute to blast out former Czech national title challenger Michal Vosyka.

The bout took place at the Deco in Northampton, on a bill jointly promoted by Errol Johnson's Black Country Boxing and ring legend Ricky Hatton.

The killer blow came when Welborn got all of his power behind a straight right hand, which caught Vosyka flush and dropped him.

The dazed European visitor answered referee Shaun Messer's count but was in no fit state to continue, the man in the middle waving him off after he'd climbed to his feet.

Welborn said: "He still didn't know where he was in the changing room afterwards. His eyes were rolling into the back of his head as the referee was counting. I hope he's OK now.

"That's boxing, I can be an animal at this weight and I've done it right this time. My nutrition and training has been world-class.

"I'll give anybody a tough night at this weight and I can punch as hard as anyone. With my style, I just get on my opponent and wait for the chance to hurt people.

"There is fire in my belly, I felt great and, no matter who was in there, I was going to let my hands go. He fell straight onto my shot.

"I was actually a bit gutted, because there was a lot more in me that I wanted to leave in the ring. I had to go for a swim with the missus the next morning to get the rest of the testosterone out!"

Meanwhile, Coseley's Jamie Gelder was outpointed by Kevin Mitchell's cousin on a pro bill at the Aria Suite in Leeds.

Cruiserweight Danny Mitchell is related to the recently-retired world lightweight title challenger. Gelder has now lost six of nine bouts, with three wins and no draws.
