Lee Glover's third title shot goes awry

Tipton's Lee Glover faces an uncertain future after this third crack at a bona-fide belt ended in less than two rounds on Saturday.

Glover was counted out of his crack at the Midlands featherweight title on the end of some devastating punches from co-challenger Leigh Wood.

They clashed on the under-card of Kell Brook's successful defence of the IBF world welterweight title against Kevin Bizier at the Sheffield Arena.

The Sky Sports cameras were rolling for this area battle for the belt vacated by Bobby Jenkinson, after he won it by outpointing Paul Holt at Wolverhampton Civic Hall last year.

Like the main event, this was over in two. Wood, a former British title challenger, forced the finish with aloof but accurate punches, writes Craig Birch.

Glover was referred to by the commentators as in the last chance saloon, after two failed attempts to claim the English super featherweight title.

And 'the Tipton Slasher' never got to grips with his rival from Gedling in Nottinghamshire, evidenced by the way he was shipping punches.

Left hands were landing bang on the button as Glover tried to get his guard and jab going, but damaging blows were to follow.

A stiff straight left to the sternum looked innocous, but it was enough for the hurt Black Country fighter to retreat towards the ropes.

Wood picked away at his guard until he landed a killer right hand to the jaw, which dropped Glover to the canvas.

He looked to be beating the count as he shot back up, but he returned to the mat to take a kn. Referee Howard Foster got to 10 before he could rise again.

The man in the middle may have waved him off anyway, though, despite Glover's remonstrations that he was fine to continue.

A huge rebuilding process will now be required for the 28-year-old, who will need a significant period to regroup for a potential fourth title shot.
