James Mongan, Raheem Mohammed and Hamzah Ahmed must all box quarter-finals in Lincolnshire to progress,

writes Craig Birch.

Girl power might also have to be displayed from Paige Goodyear and Phoebe Hodson when they are called into action.

The semi-finals and final will be staged by the Heart of Portsmouth outfit on the South Coast, over two days on the weekend commencing April 2.

But first come the last eight clashes at the Meres Leisure Centre in Grantham, where the hopefuls will again engage in three-round bouts.

The second national tournament on the unpaid calendar for 2016 continues with two divisions separated by age, one encompassing 2000-2001 born entrants and another solely for 2001.

The pre-quarters took place at the Newdigate Social Club in Bedworth where Mongan, Mohammed and Ahmed were the big winners.

Mongan, from Priory Park in Dudley, competed at 46kg in the 2001 only 'cadet' class and scored his second victory in the competition.

He defeated Steven Dowling, from Hall Green in Birmingham, unanimously on points in the West Midlands final.

A closer-run affair came against Jack Murphy, from Bedbury & Stockport, but it was Mongan who had his hand raised on a split. He now faces Burton Park's Samuel Strand.

Stepping up in style - James Mongan's first Junior year has proved to be successful so far.

Mohammed, representing Merridale in Wolverhampton, had scored a second round stoppage against Anthony Wilson, from O'Dells in Birmingham, in his previous outing.

And Mohammed handed Bury's Shamraiz Nadin standing counts in the first and second rounds on his way to a unanimous success at 48kg. He now tackles Shepshed's Kian Corssen

Rugeley Police's Myles Basford was eliminated at 54kg come unanimously against Levi Smith, from Sharpstyle in Blackpool.

Warley's Owen Brown also saw his spirited run end at 50kg in the 2000-01 category. Aiming for a hat-trick of Junior wins, Sharpstyle's William Birchall instead saw him off unanimously.

Ahmed saw off Leigh's Harry Winnard at 57kg, his counter punching guiding him past his rival on a split. Bradley Bethall, from Braunstone Golden Gloves in Leicester, comes next for him.

Wodensborough's Shaun Rutherford never got to box his 70kg tie with Connor Tudsbury, from Moss Side Fire in Manchester. He was forced to withdraw because of an ear injury.

Paige Goodyear and Phoebe Hodson both come into the reckoning for the 2000-01 girls section, with their first action so far.

Goodyear, from the Brooklands home gym in Dudley run by former professional Darren McDermott, will either be paired or get a bye from a five-pronged 54kg.

Hodson, representing the Right Stuff in Stafford, is almost certain to box on the day with another seven entered at 63kg.

Merridale duo Simran Kaur and Kara Murray are already through to finals weekend. Kaur will have five in her division at 48kg when that comes to pass.

Murray has been handed a great opportunity to claim her first national title. She boxes a straight final at 60kg against the well-schooled Elisha Mannouch, from Swale Gloves in Kent.
