Deja vu for Priory Park with Josh Miller

It will be déjà vu for the pro section of Priory Park Boxing Club when Josh Miller makes his paid bow at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

The Dudley debutant becomes the latest from the gym to turn over under the lights of the Civic in next Saturday's fight night, with the BoxNation cameras on hand.

The 23-year-old super middleweight will step through the ropes for four rounds with Iain Jackson, an opponent known to coach Paul Gough.

Jackson was in the other corner when Priory's first pro graduate, Ryan Aston, made his debut four years ago, writes Craig Birch.

Familiar foe - Josh Miller will step through the ropes with Iain Jackson on fight night.

'Tank' settled for a 40-36 points landslide that day in Jackson's fourth paid outing and the veteran from Brighton has competed 32 times since.

Aston and Ricky Summers – the latter now taking a break from boxing – have played a big part in getting Miller ready for the switch.

And Aston's first-hand experience of tackling the 36-year-old might well prove invaluable, as Miller negotiates the pitfalls of facing him.

Jackson reminded the game of his capabilities by scoring a TKO in his last outing, taking the unbeaten record of Matty Parr to make it five victories in total.

Gough said: "We know some of what to expect from Jackson from when Ryan went in with him, but this could well be a different fight.

"His style has changed somewhat, as he's been in the ring regularly. He tucks up a lot, he's clever and tries to nullify you.

"I'm led to believe that he's not staying in the sport for much longer, so maybe he will want to go out with a bang. Josh will need his wits about him.

"If he performs as he has been in training, he'll beat him comfortably. He's been sparring a lot with Ryan and that will stand him in good stead."

Miller boxed in the vest of Priory Park to the tune of 18 bouts in three years, losing just six. Before walking into the gym three years ago, he had a background in Mixed Martial Arts.

He also reached the West Midlands final of what is now the England Senior Development Championship and lifted the Central Area Elite heavyweight title, vacating afterwards.

Skills are his strength, according to Gough. He said: "He's a boxer and it will be interesting to see what he can do in the pros, now we have got him out of his bad habits!

"It was frustrating for him, at first, but he's starting to slow his feet down and lean back on his shots, so the power is coming through more.

"He's a dedicated lad and, if he continues to progress, he'll have a nice run."

Aston also features on the Civic show, which is nearing a sell out, in an English light middleweight title eliminator against Nathan Graham. Stable-mate Les Byfield appears at lightweight.

The card will be headlined by Tommy Langford's first defence of the WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title against Argentinian Christian Fabian Rios.

Former British, Commonwealth and IBF world champion Paul Butler, who hovers between super fly and bantam, will compete in the fight night's third 10-rounder.

Midlands champion Andrew Robinson, from Redditch, has been pencilled in for a six-rounder with fellow super middle Tyler Denny, also trained by Shaun Cooper, another appearing.

Frank Warren's television channel will broadcast live with his fighters Josh Leather, Macaulay McGowan, Leon Woodstock and Brummie Raza Hamza completing the line-up.
