Tyler Denny wants a proper fight at the Civic
Rowley Regis' Tyler Denny won't be getting into another "wrestling match" when he's back in action at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday night.
Denny made his pro debut against Shaunn Watt at Dudley's the Venue in March and his opponent knew all the tricks,
The 23-year-old middleweight encountered little resistance in scoring a 40-36 points shut out but, as his own fiercest critic, wasn't happy.
The punching plumber feels a combination of Watt's spoiling and nerves stopped him from showing what he can really do, which he's vowing to put fight this time.
Saturday's fight night could be played out in front of over 1,000 people, with opponent Aaron Robinson looking to spoil his work again.
And Denny has been able to call upon a top-class operator who he believes has got him ready to pick apart his adverdsary.
Midlands light middleweight champion Jason Welborn, also of Rowley Regis, tops the bill in his hugely-anticipated title defence against Dudley's Ryan Aston.
Welborn and Denny have put each other through their paces at trainer Shaun Cooper's gym in Brierley Hill, which the former Old Hill amateur reckons has made all of the difference.
Denny said: "Jason just doesn't give you a moment's rest, there's no breathing space with him so you have to match that work-rate, for a start.
"He's doesn't know how to punch weakly, either, and there's many times I have come out feeling sore. But that's the sort of preparation I want.
"Journeymen like Watt will try and hold onto you, which makes it like a wrestling match, but I'll be ready for that now after sparring with Jason.
"The first thing I had to do was use my jab a lot more, just to keep him out of my face, which will serve me well when my opponents are grabbing me.
"We've helped each other out, really, as I'm a southpaw and he'll get the same with Ryan. The training for all of the lads in our gym has been intense - even better than my last camp.
"I have listened to my body, this time, by not over-doing it and making sure I peak at the right time. Train and rest - that's all I have done."
Andrew Robinson is also a part of Cooper's camp and takes on 'Prince' David Davis for the vacant Midlands middleweight crown at the Civic.
'Robbo' and Denny have had wars in the sparring ring before his debut and for this one, so he's knows what Ilkeston's Davis is getting himself into.
Denny also operates in the 160lb division and would love to go for the belt down the line, but is backing Robinson to become the immediate champion.
He said: "Andrew lives for boxing, he's so game and super fit and I reckon he can do the 10 rounds easy. He's looking good, so I think he will win.
"I am confident both he and Jason will bring the belts back to the gym. I think they both punch too hard not to get the wins and the titles."
