Midlands shot 'honour' to Stafford's Rob Hunt

Stafford's Rob Hunt will be "honoured" to box for the now-vacant Midlands welterweight title on Saturday April 25 at Walsall Town Hall.

Hunt has been granted an opportunity at the area crown, vacated by Stourbridge's Sam Eggington, after claiming the British Masters Bronze belt in February.

It was third time lucky for the 29-year-old after unsuccessful attempts at British and International Masters honours over his nine-year career, writes Craig Birch.

And fourth time could be a charm for Hunt, at a strap he's coveted and may finally get his hands on in his 25th professional contest.

He's been matched with Nuneaton's Sullivan Mason, a capable co-challenger who has been beaten just once in 12 paid bouts.

He's a respectable adversary and his skills could well bring out the best in Hunt, who is determined to make it his fight night of glory.

He said: "It's an honour to get my shot at the Midlands and I can't let this chance pass me by. I've been in pro boxing too long for that.

"I am expecting a tough test but you won't get any easy rides at this level, he's going to bring his best and I will do the same.

"I've worked hard for this and I am confident. If I thought I had no chance of winning, I wouldn't bother getting in there.

"He's a lot like me – a tall, tidy boxer who likes to work off the jab. That will be a change for me, rather than trying to pin down smaller opponents.

"If we get in close, I might well get the chance to use the variety of shots we have been working on in the gym. This fight could show how good I can be."

Midlands light welterweight champion Luke Paddock, from Bloxwich, features on the under-card alongside two former area bosses.

Rowley Regis' Jason Welborn, also twice a challenger to the British light middleweight title, features as does Stourbridge's Steven Pearce, a rival to Eggington and Hunt.

Popular middleweight Warren Sinden, from Welshpool, and Burton-based light welterweight Tom Shaw also appear with two debutants completing the card.

Wolverhampton's Sid Bowater, older brother of established pro Des, turns over at welter as does light middle Craig Morris, from Ludlow in Shropshire.

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 ringside, are available from the Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900.
