Unshakeable Grant Cunningham is good to go

There's no shaking Stafford's Grant Cunningham with hours to go until whether he finds out he's good enough to challenge for the English title.

It's now or never for the 31-year-old, who has an eliminator for the national middleweight belt at the Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock,

writes Craig Birch.

'Maximus' takes on also undefeated Damon Jones in his first 10-rounder, having sparred the likes of Midlands champion and name-sake Craig Cunningham in 'southpaw school.'

The man from Moss Pit could surge ahead of the area boss in the rankings with victory tonight and remained a picture of calm at the weigh-in.

Cunningham barely noticed Jones, posting a healthy 11st 5lb 80z before leaving Wednesbury Boxing Academy to return to work as a commissioning engineer.

Some might expect jitters come fight night but there's no sign of that yet - and there may still be none when he makes his way to the ring.

He said: "We didn't have much to say to each other and I still don't know a lot about him. He's won 12 and me 10, so someone's '0' has to go.

"I haven't boxed a southpaw since the amateurs, I lost that fight on points but I wasn't prepared for that like I am for this, which will be important.

"Southpaws are actually all different, although you can study the basics of what they do easy enough. To have someone skilful and strong like Craig for sparring has those bases covered.

"This is a good as a shot at the Midlands title for me and it's the one that could open doors. There's a lot at stake but it's the same old scenario - I stay calm."

Third shot - Stafford's Rob Hunt (right) joins Cunningham on the title trail and could leave tonight with a belt.

Stafford's Rob Hunt could get his hands on a belt directly tonight, for British Bronze Masters honours on a long campaign at welter.

Again, it could be the last chance for the 29-year-old, after falling short on both of the previous occasions he has been in for a crown.

Hunt has over eight years and 24 bouts worth of paid experience, but wasn't able to claim British or International Masters honours.

But he will never get a better chance than tonight in an eight-rounder against Liam Richards, who has come flying up the weights.

The Wiltshire scrapper once held the British Masters title four divisions below at super feather and wasn't present to tip the scales.

A naturally smaller man, there's no worries he won't make the weight, although he has cost Hunt his favourite meal on the eve of the fight!

He said: "I haven't starved myself to make the weight so it's fine, but I couldn't have the spaghetti bolognese I was going to have last night.

"Instead it was a protein shake and vegetables but maybe I can treat myself to it after I have boxed tonight, with the belt on the table with me!

"I know he will be full of energy, maybe that's the only thing he's got going for him. All he can do is come at me full pace and get on me like a rash.

"But I will have the longest jab of anyone he's ever boxed and that's what I will look to put him behind. I am feeling strong, too, through a good training camp.

"I am desperate to win a title and do it by stoppage would be fantastic."

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 ringside, will be available on the door tonight. For more information, call 01543 504 065.
