Jerry Mongan will come into the national stages of the England Junior championships fresh after walking over the area final through a bye.

Mongan, from Priory Park Boxing Club in Dudley, picked up a West Midlands winner's vest as there was no opponent for him at 57kg,

The England international and Schoolboys champion is entered in the boxers born in 2000 only category, as is club-mate Blake Clarke at 44kg and Brad Willets at 63kg.

Clarke eased through unanimously, while Willets had to battle to come through a split decision to make it a hat-trick of West Midlands champions for the club.

Trainer Warren Davies said: "Jerry has done well for himself but we are taking nothing for granted, past titles mean nothing now and this is a different test.

"We have took him up a weight and he probably could have gone higher, he walks around at 60kg but he managed to get down to 57kg quite comfortably in the end.

Patience - Priory Park's Blake Clarke picks his shots as Wednesbury's Mo Ali wades in during their area decider.

"Blake is going to be a really good fighter, his foot-work is excellent. His Mum is a professional dancer, so that's certainly rubbed off on him.

"It's all about experience for him just now, as he's only had four fights, but he's tidy and compact and he's only going to get better as time goes on.

"Brad is big and strong but he can box, too. It's great we have three West Midlands champions already, so let's see how far the lads can go."

A fourth Priory lad, Sam Gwilt, had to fight tooth and nail before coming a cropper at the final hurdle, losing his area decider against Tamworth's Ryan Davies at 50kg on Sunday.

That was a box off after defeating Telford & Wrekin's Kieran Solon unanimously on points at the Donnington Sports & Social Centre on Saturday's first day of action at the venue.

That came in the combined 1999-2000 category where Rugeley, Lions of Dudley and Walsall Wood are also represented in the section.

But there's no place for Harry Hughes, from William Perry in Tipton, who was defeated on a split decision by Ludlow's Chadd Woodfield in the 60kg semi-final.

Rugeley's Oliver Cooper is at 46kg, Lions' Rhamatullah Sher competes at 52kg while Wood's Zashif Khan has been entered at 54kg.
