Sam Eggington to take on Denton Vassell
Stourbridge's Midlands welterweight champion Sam Eggington will take on Denton Vassell in a British title eliminator next month.
The contest was today confirmed on the under-card of Scott Quigg's WBA super bantamweight title defence against Paulus Ambunda.
All of the action takes place at the Manchester Arena on Saturday September 13, under the bright lights of the Sky Sports cameras.
It's crunch time for Eggington in his toughest pro test, against the former Commonwealth champion and British title challenger.
Vassell won and defended his crown three times, before the domestic belts were merged with last year's loss to Frankie Gavin.
He turns 30 on the day he's due to step through the ropes with Eggington and is nine years the senior of his up-and-coming adversary.
'The Savage' has been in 13 fights over two years since turning pro at 18, with 11 wins and five stoppages, and still holds the area title.
He caught the eye of promoters Matchroom Boxing with two runs in Prizefighter, the last to the semi-final in April.
He now battles Vassell over 10 rounds having completed that distance only once before, outpointing Dave Ryan last November.
Eggington tweeted: "Looks like boxing fans are looking forward to mine and Denton's fight in sept! So am I!"
Trainer Jon Pegg said on Facebook: "Very tough fight, but the rewards are huge if Sam pulls it off."
Vassell's coach Bob Shannon: "Absolutely cannot wait to bring @DentonVassell back on such a big bill! Respect to @eggington_sam for taking it as well!!"
Recently deposed British light welterweight champion and former footballer Curtis Woodhouse will be watching closely.
The former England under-21 and Birmingham City midfielder was a sparring partner of Eggington's before hanging up his gloves.
The 34-year-old tweeted: "A quality scrap. Great fight, both lads come to have it, save a ringside seat for me!!!"
