It's a ruby, ruby, ruby for Ricky Summers

Tipton's Ricky Summers is targeting a fifth straight win when he boxes in Birmingham next month - and a vindaloo straight after the fight!

He's working with nutritionist Cain Leathem to help make him into a "fit and strong" super middleweight contender,

writes Matt Bozeat.

But it's also made him peckish! The 26 year-old describes his new diet as "horrible," mainly due to him still feeling hungry after the fact.

He boxes at the Tower Ballrooms in Edgbaston a week on Saturday and will be in a rush - he's heading out for a curry straight afterwards.

He said: "I love takeaways and spicy food. But now all I'm eating is small meals and protein shakes that leave me still feeling hungry afterwards.

"I'm feeling fitter and stronger and at my height (6ft 2ins), I'm going to be a big super middleweight. But it's horrible to have to eat all this porridge.

"I will definitely be going out for a vindaloo after my next fight. I've got a big family and after I box, we like to go out for a meal and talk about the fight."

There will be two new additions to the Summers' family next month, as girlfriend Jodie Jackson is set to give birth to twin boys.

Summers said: "It will all be for them. I know my life's going to change and I can't go out with the lads anymore, but I want to keep training and fighting.

"Hopefully, I will be fighting for the Midlands title by the end of the year."

Summers has a habit of predicting the future in boxing - and told of how the refereeing storm that made the headlines last year put a smile on his face.

Referee Howard Foster was criticised for stopping the world title clash between Carl Froch and George Groves last November in the ninth round.

But Summers wasn't complaining after betting on a ninth-round finish, saying: "I won a bit of money on Carl to win that fight just then.

"If they boxed again I think Carl would stop him again. He's so tough and he comes on strong in the later rounds."

Summers knows all about Froch having sparred him last year and said: "Carl's strength is the key.

"He's also a crafty fighter. He doesn't take shots flush and he cuts the ring off well."

Summers could share a ring with another world-class fighter in the coming months, as trainer Paul Gough is hoping to take him to Wales to spar Enzo Maccarinelli.

The former WBU and WBO cruiserweight champion is currently preparing to challenge Juergen Braehmer for his WBA light heavyweight title in Germany on Saturday April 5.

Summers said: "Sparring good lads makes you up your game and keeps you thinking."

Tickets for the show at the Tower Ballrooms are still available from 07427 609 377.
