Rob Hunt feels at his peak for title tussle

Stafford's Rob Hunt feels he's peaking as a fighter as he targets his first title in the pro ranks where it all began at Walsall Town Hall on Saturday night.

Seven years after his paid debut at the same venue, Hunt is again going for the British Masters welterweight crown.

Former Midlands champion Steven Pearce, from Stourbridge, will be in the other corner and Hunt feels he's a better boxer than when he lost to Ben Lawler for the same belt in 2010.

Hunt said: "Training is going great, I'm feeling very strong, very fit and I am looking forward to it. In the past, I used to panic and get a little nervous at times.

"But it's gradually come together now and my mind has peaked. I'm definitely peaking as a boxer, I am always learning but I feel I'm developing all the time.

"I have had to, as I turned pro at a later stage and didn't have many fights as an amateur."

Hunt plans to use his height advantage to keep scrapper 'Fierce Pearce' at bay during the 10-rounder and insists he will bring nothing to the ring he hasn't seen before.

He said: "Pearce is a warrior. With my physique being tall and rangy, I get a lot of boxers coming at me. I am used to it and I will be prepared for the same in this fight."

Walsall Town Hall is proving a lucky stomping ground for the 28-year-old, who picked up a points win against now-retired Brummie Andrew Patterson the last time he was in action two months ago.

Hunt said: "A lot of people told me I could have stopped him, but I felt fit and gained experience. I am glad that turned out to be a six-rounder, as it's great preparation for this 10-round fight.

"It's going to be a great night, I can't wait. The last one was fantastic, so it will be the same this time round as well."

Stafford's Grant Cunningham, the undefeated middleweight from Moss Pit, has withdrawn from his contest with former English title challenger Harry Matthews due to work commitments.

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 ringside, are available from the Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900. The after-show party is at the Pitch Sports Bar and Grill on Bridge Street in Walsall.
