Lee Glover wants Chris Male after eliminator

Tipton's Lee Glover today stoked the fires for a big Black Country clash with Cradley's Chris Male by calling out his super featherweight rival.

Glover was back boxing for the first time in nearly two years on September's Walsall Town Hall offering and sees more action on the November 16 show at the same venue.

Male goes in for a British title eliminator against Coventry's Troy James at the top of the bill, after Glover has duelled on the under-card with Estonian opponent Igor Tsujev.

British champion Stephen Smith is the target for all three fighters but Glover wants to muscle in on the action, having seen a promising career stall in recent times.

The 'Tipton Slasher' wants Male, issuing an 'any time, any place' challenge and feels he would be a harder opponent for than James, who he beat convincingly in the amateur ranks.

Glover said: "I want a shot at Chris Male. We are both from the same area and there's a bit of rivalry between us. He thinks he's better than me and I know I am better than him.

"I don't think he will fight me but I want to fight him. He is going to fight Troy James, who I beat, so let's see if we can get it on in the near future instead.

"If Male wants to get it on, I will go today, tomorrow, next week, next month. The sooner the better for me."

Male is focusing on the task in hand after recovering from another injury nightmare, which saw his first fight with James at Dudley's Copthorne Hotel scrubbed in September.

It was the latest in a catalogue of injuries that have cost him big fights since turning pro in 2008 with a badly broken hand, torn rotator cuff and then calf problems.

But the punching postman has still pursued his dreams of national glory and it could be the last chance for both him and James, with both having lost English title shots.

Male said: "My calf is fine now. It was a freak injury that happened in sparring and, on doctor's orders, I needed to rest it.

"The physiotherapist said it was a high-level muscle strain and I was gutted to have to pull out. It was the right thing to do, though, because I wasn't able to train or even walk for a few days.

"The injury is behind me now. I feel great and training is going perfect."

Tickets are available from the Town Hall Box Office on 0845 111 2900. The after-show party is at the Pitch Sports Bar on Bridge Street in Walsall.
