British title fighters meet at Walsall Town Hall

Pro boxing returns to the West Midlands on September 7 at Walsall Town Hall with British title fighters Jason Welborn and Max Maxwell in the main event.

Rowley Regis' Welborn, who lost a British title shot to Frankie Gavin in January, marks his permanent step up to light middleweight with a test against Maxwell.

Jamaican-born Brummie Maxwell was defeated in a revenge mission by Brian Rose for the 11st British belt last year and has also challenged for the English title that year.

The match could have be made for a Masters belt over 10 rounds and it's an all-West Midlands battle, pitting the naturally bigger man against the stone fists of Welborn.

He said: "I feel really strong at light middleweight. I was getting to the stage when I was finding it harder and harder to get down to welterweight.

"I wasn't weight drained but I think light middle is a more natural weight for me.

"My power is better, my recovery in the corner round to round is better, everything feels better, which is a good thing.

"Maxwell has been around the block and is a tough kid. He's fought for the British title at this weight, so this is a good test for me."

On the under-card, Stafford's Rob Hunt boxes back at the venue where he made his pro debut in May 2006 with a one-round knockout of Ian Clyde.

The experienced welterweight, 27, will be 20 fights further on when he climbs out of the ropes where he made his paid bow at his next fight night.

Cannock's Dave Egan will be looking for redemption when he boxes for the first time since he was counted out in his pro defeat two months ago.

After that compelling scrap with puncher Mark McKray, 'Handsome Dave' will be looking to get back to basics and winning ways at welterweight.

Bloxwich's Luke Paddock boxes in his hometown for the first time and has grown in stature over three wins performing as a light welter so far.

Wolverhampton's Des Bowater is another fighter on the rise and the super feather 'Wednesfield Warrior' believes he can win a world title.

West Bromwich's Tom Stokes will be looking to kick on to his second professional win after making his debut at the same venue in May.

Tipton's Anthony Tildesley makes his debut at welter, while Stoke's Kevin Hanks takes on ever-green Brummie Sid Razak at lightweight.

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 ringside, are available from Walsall Town Hall Box Office by calling 0845 111 2900.
